Yes that’s right, P5 took their learning outdoors when they were invited to attend school, not in a conventional school building, but under the lofty rafters of Kilbroney Forest. Liz Farnan was our teacher for the day and we learnt many things, from Latin to how to measure the height of a tree.
This event was organised to remember the endeavours of local man Tom Dunn who took it upon himself to educate others when it had to be done in secret and often under cover of the forest. Liz showed us the actual book that Tom Dunn used in his lessons, a treasured possession.
This Sunday 17th September at 3pm, a statue of Tom Dunn will be unveiled in Rostrevor Square by Mary McAleese. The unveiling will be followed by music, drama, song and poetry and everyone is very welcome to come along and join in.
